Manual Comb Binding Machine 101

Let’s start with some refresher on the conventional comb binding machine. It’s one of the many easy, effective and inexpensive ways to bind pages and documents together - to create notebooks, journals, reports, recipe books, and more. It’s also widely used by high school and university students to create their studying guide and assignment submission deck.

But what makes comb binding so convenient and a trusted go-to for everyone? For starters,  it’s super straightforward and easy to use - all you need is a binding machine and round plastic binding comb. Next is the fact that the binding and pages can be adjusted easily allowing room for error or even perfection. The binding can be reopened for removing or adding more pages into the already bound set of pages. As for the plastic binding comb, it can actually be removed and used again for other reports and projects. Talk about being economical!

Wondering if a comb binding machine is right for you? Ask yourself a few simple questions below to get a better idea.

  • Are you currently paying an external vendor (printing shop, stationery shop etc) to do the binding work?
If yes, then consider investing in a good quality binding machine to do the work in-house and save such expense.
  • Are your books and reports on the thinner side, requiring only a few punched stacks of papers per book?
If yes, the comb binding machine will work perfectly. Or else, you might end up spending too much time doing many rounds of punching and the plastic comb might not be able to hold the stacks together.
  • Do you have the manpower and time to spare for the binding work?
If yes, go for it! It’s a rather quick job (and sometimes, it’s a nice “break time" from the usual tasks).

How To Use A Comb Binding Machine

  1. Check that the comb binding machine is placed stably on a safe working table before use.
  2. Prepare all the pages that need to be punched, including the front and back cover, along with the plastic binding comb.
  3. Insert some sheets of paper to be punched (about 10-20 sheets at a time). Then pull the handle and punch the sheets to make holes.
  4. Place the plastic binding comb on the machine’s comb opener and push the handle lever to open the comb.
  5. Carefully insert the opened combs spines through the holes in the sheets.
  6. Release the comb opener and close the comb.
  7. You’re all done! On to the next binding!
